Why are you vegetarian?

           50 REASONS

WHY I AM A VEGETARIAN

The Environment

  1. Conservation of Fossil fuel. It takes 78 calories of fossil fuel to produce 1 calorie of beef protein; 35 calories for 1 calorie of pork; 22 calories for 1 of poultry; but just 1 calorie of fossil fuel for 1 calorie of soybeans. By eating plant foods instead of animal foods, I help conserve our non-renewable sources of energy.
  2. Water Conservation. It takes 3 to 15 times as much water to produce animal protein as it does plant protein. As a vegetarian I contribute to water conservation.
  3. Efficient use of grains. It takes up to 16 pounds of soybeans and grains to produce 1 lb. of beef and 3 to 6 lbs. to produce 1 lb of turkey & egg. By eating grain foods directly, I make the food supply more efficient & that contributes to the environment.
  4. Soil conservation. When grains & legumes are used more efficiently, our precious topsoil is automatically made more efficient in its use. We use less agricultural resources to provide for the same number of people.
  5. Saving our forests. Tropical forests in Brazil and other tropic regions are destroyed daily, in part, to create more acreage to raise livestock. By not supporting the meat industry, I directly reduce the demand to pillage these irreplaceable treasures of nature. Since the forest land “filters” our air supply and contains botanical sources for new medicines, this destruction is irreversable.
  6. Asthetics. Decaying animal parts, whether in a freezer case or served in restaurants, can never be as asthetically pleasing to the senses as the same foods made from wholesome vegetable sources. Only habit can allow one not to perceive this: a change in diet makes this self evident.

    Personal Health

  7. No deficiencies. There is no nutrient necessary for optimal human functioning which cannot be obtained from plant food.
  8. High fat plus cholesterol. Animal foods are higher in fat than most plant foods, particularly saturated fats. Plants do not contain cholesterol.
  9. “Carb” deficient. Meat is deficient in carbohydrates, particularly the starches which are so essential to proper health.
  10. Vitamin deficient. Except for the b-complex, meat is largely deficient in vitamins.
  11. Agricultural Chemicals. Being higher on the food chain, animal foods contain far higher concentrations of agricultural chemicals than plant foods, including pesticides, herbicides, etc.
  12. Exposure to livestock drugs. There are over 20,000 different drugs, including sterols, antibiotics, growth hormones and other veterinary drugs that are given to livestock animals. These drugs are consumed when animal foods are consumed. The dangers herein, in secondary consumption of antibiotics, are well documented.
  13. Pathogenic Microorganisms. There are a host of bacteria and viruses, some quite dangerous, that are common to animals. When I eat meat, I eat the organisms in the meat. Micro-organisms are present in plant foods too, but their number and danger to human health is by no means comparable to that of those in meat.
  14. Worms and other Parasites. Ditto on # 13!
  15. Shelf life differential. Plant foods last longer than animal foods. Try this experiment: Leave out a head of lettuce and a pound of hamburger for 1 day, which will make you sick?
  16. Organoleptic Indications of Pathenogens. Plant foods give tell-tale signs of “going bad”. Ever hear of someone getting sick from “bad broccoli”?
  17. Heart Disease. Meat eating increases the risk of heart disease, this country’s #1 killer. The correlation is an epidemiological fact.
  18. Cancer prevention. Of all the natural cancer prevention substances found: vitamin C, B-17, hydroquionenes, beta carotene, NDGA, – none has been found to be animal derived. Yet most meats, when cooked, produce an array of benzenes and other carcinogenic compounds. Cancer is infinitely easier to prevent than cure. Soybeans contain protease inhibitor, a powerful anticancer compound. You won’t find it in useful quantities in animal based food.
  19. Disease Inducing. The correlation between meat consumption and a wide range of degenerative diseases is well founded and includes…..
  20. Osteoporosis
  21. Kidney Stones and Gallstones
  22. Diabetes
  23. Multiple Sclerosis
  24. Arthritis
  25. Gum disease
  26. Acne. Aggravated by animal food.
  27. Obesity. Studies confirm that vegetarians tend to be thinner than meat eaters. Obesity is considered by doctors to be a disease within itself.
  28. Intestinal Toxemia. The condition of the intestinal flora is critical to overall health. Animal products putrefy the colon.
  29. Transit time. Wholesome food travels quickly through the “G.I” tract, leaving little time to spoil and incite disease within the body.
  30. Fiber deficient. Fiber absorbs unwanted, excess fats; cleans the intestines; provides bulk and aids in peristalsis. Plant food is high in fiber content; meat, poultry and dairy products have none.
  31. Body wastes. Food from animals contain their waste, including adrenaline, uric and lactic acid, etc., Before adding ketchup, the biggest contributors to the “flavor profile” of a hamburger are the leftover blood and urine.
  32. Excess protein. The average American eats 400% of the RDA for protein. This causes excess nitrogen in the blood that creates a host of long-term health problems.
  33. Longevity. To increase ones risk of getting degenerative disease means decreasing ones chance to live a naturally long healthy life. Huzas and other peoples with large centenarian populations maintain lifestyles that are relatively meat free.
  34. Well Being. I just feel better since “giving up” meat and becoming vegetarian.

    Personal Finances

  35. Health care costs. Being healthier on a vegetarian diet means spending less on health care.
  36. Food costs. Vegetarian foods tend to cost less than meat based items.

    Ethics

  37. Love of animals. I love animals as I love myself. I have no desire to kill them or cause them harm.
  38. Stance against Factory Farming.. I cannot make a statement against factory farming if I myself eat animals.
  39. Respect for Sentient Life. I show gratitude to my Creator(s?) by eating as low on the food chain as possible.
  40. “Economic Vote”. I show support of the meat industry and the way they operate when I purchase and use their products.
  41. Small sacrifice The sacrifice I make is nothing compared to the animals, its life.
  42. Natural diet. Our hands, teeth, feet, intestinal tract…even our body chemistry is that of an herbivore.
  43. Reciprocity. If I partake in the slaughter of animals, I will have to repay my contribution to that act.
  44. “Protecting the Temple”. “Whatever affects the body has a corresponding effect on the mind and soul” (E.G. White)
  45. I believe in nonviolence. Slaughter isn’t.
  46. World Peace. There can never be peace among men while men are declaring war on other highly developed life forms.
  47. Clear conscience. I know what I’m doing is right. I feel good inside about my decision to remain “meatless”
  48. Example. To live this way is to protect the underlying values of those around me.
  49. Easy substitutes. There are vegetable based substitutes for every meat product imaginable.
  50. loving to all beings.

Views of  Why are you vegetarian?

Why are you vegetarian? I want to know your reasons for being vegetarian, whatever they may be! There are so many reasons to go vegetarian and advantages of being vegetarian, and your own reasons may be very personal and unique. So please share you own “why vegetarian” and reason you decided to become vegetarian! Many people go vegetarian for health reasons, animal rights, religious and even human rights. What about you? Why did you become veg?

I’m Not Sure Yet

Honestly, I’ve thought a lot about going vegan. Not JUST because thinking about killing animals sickens me, but also for my health. I mean, being me, I always say to myself that I’ll eat healthier. But going vegan could help me realize other reasons that I want to be healthy. I don’t know, but it sounds cool.
—Guest Victoria

what i have become

I became vegetarian because humans deserve to live as much as an animal. I wont even hurt a fly. Now I have become allergic to egg and become lactose intolerant. I have to become vegan. Its going to be hard but i will succeed. :)
—Guest jessaliena

Dare

I got dared to go vegetarian. 3 years later, 2 dress sizes down and I have never looked back. I’m thinking of becoming a vegan.
—Guest jazzyjizzy69

It was time!

I decided to become Vegan about 2 weeks ago. I have not looked back yet. I did it cold turkey (no pun intended) I have always battled with my weight. I needed to focus on eating healthy and living a healthy lifestyle. I decided it was the right time to do it. Eating as a vegan just seems to make sense for me. Although I never thought I would be able to give up eating meat. I am enjoying to re-learn how to cook, and order at a restaurant. It has been a great experience. I do not crave meat, cheese or anything else. I feel great, I have more energy and I feel good about myself.
—Guest Ebob

No longer want others to kill for me

Since I read a book called “A higher Taste”, I have slowly come to see meat as animal.fish/bird corpses..I don’t want to cause them to be raised from birth, then killed, for me to tear apart and consume…It’s just not correct, and it’s not necessary.
—Guest Lowell

Thinking of Going Vegetarian

I’m type 2 diabetic & I’ve heard that being Vegan – or at a minimum – wheat & dairy free will make it go away.
—Guest TYPE2INPA

not necessary to eat meat.

I became vegetarian 10 years ago, at age 12. The reasons changed with the time. at age 12 I felt most sorry for the animals. At the moment my conclusion can be summarized: It is not necessary to eat meat. There is so much inconvenience – for the environment, for the climate, for the animals and for mankind – that could be avoided if everybody reduces his or her meat consumption.
—Guest brb

Why are you vegetarian?

I’m just starting with vegetarianism and I want to ease myself into it. I’m doing it for health and ethical reasons. I don’t want to tell the meat companies that I’m ok with the way animals are treated by purchasing their goods. It makes me feel a lot better.
—Guest RoterSand44

Can’t kill and eat humans

When I used to eat meat, I had a tough time defending my position on why I don’t eat humans (e.g road kill, death row inmates etc). If Darwin’s discovery has taught us anything, it is that humans are not that different from animals. We share 95% of our genes with chimps. Almost all of our organ systems are the same. And many of the fundamental nerve connections are – they have a sense of self. Their neurons fire in the same pattern when we hurt them – they feel pain. And so on. I cannot have double standards. Occam’s razor. I’ve been a vegetarian during all of 2011, gave up eggs in 2012, and am on my way to stop consuming dairy products. I found Peter Singer’s arguments very convincing.
—Guest aew9thae

Corpse of animal

I have been vegetarian for the past 6 years why I stopped eating meat was When I look at fish and meat I felt that I am eating corpse of animals. and I thought why should I make my stomach a cemetary of animals. now I am very happy of my decision.
—Guest Neroomie

I have made my choice :) ))

i have decided to become a veg. I don’t want to damage my body any more than I have. I want good health and I think this is a wonderful way to start. So everyone wish me luck !!! :) ))))
—Guest The New Veg.

for others and myself

I started only few weeks ago. I knew for very long time that it is right way to go, my best friend has been vegetarian for years and I have also seen “Earthlings”. But I didn’t felt motivated enough. My decision to go vegetarian was when I read one internet book about vegetarianism. I found out how humans are built to eat fruit and vegetables – thinking about meat-eating chimpanzee was disgusting enough for me (and realization that it was me). I also learned that global hunger and enviormental problems (disasters actually) are strongly linked to my meat-diet. I didn’t want to be responsible for 50 people who had to starve because I eat beef. I haven’t eaten meat for a while now and I don’t thing I’ll ever go back because I feel so much better – much more energetic and peaceful. I am not so tired anymore and I feel much less agressive and irritable – I get along with everybody much better. And it was so much easier to do than I thought.
—Guest Merli

I feel great

I was vegetarian for most of my childhood, out of my love for animals. When I started eating meat again in my teens, I said to myself ‘one day, I will go the whole hog and go vegan’ and thats where I am now! I would love to say its for ethical reasons (which it mostly is) but as my family all eat meat, it doesnt quite sit right with me (Id hate to be branded a hypocrite). Im happier, healthier and thinner, need I say more? :)
—Guest JollyVegan

I love animals

I get an amazing feeling knowing that I’m not supporting animal cruelty. Whenever I see a cute cow, pig or other animal, I know for sure that I will never eat something as adorable as that. It’s also very good for the environment. An extra bonus is that it’s healthy! Since there are practically no vegetarian options at fast food restaurants (not even McDonald’s fries are vegetarian!) I’ve avoided going there all together. And you end up eating so much more fruits and vegetables, which makes you look AND feel better!
—Guest brit

Why did you become veg?

I know that I’ll be healthier if I eat mostly veggies and fruits. I will continue to eat eggs for protein. I also have to give up cheese and most dairy because of IBS. So, I need to know what I’m doing! Thanks for the website!
—Guest Miriam Pat

Why I am a vegetarian

Every since I was younger I would sit in my grandmothers or moms garden and eat raw veggies and fruit… i have never really liked meat for some reason. Red meat messes with my digestion and I don’t process it very well. I noticed when i dont eat it my stomach doesnt hurt. I cant eat dairy either… it works horrible with me. i feel better, cleaner, have more energy and now i am just trying to find alot of different recipes and learn to eat better….
—Guest Katherine rodeiguez

Respect every life.

I don’t want to see a poor animal being killed to fulfill my appetite. In fact I don’t want to see any life being wasted for any reason. Especially when there is an alternative.
—Guest Ajinkya

It’s the only ethical choice for me.

I don’t want other living beings to die just so I can have a meal. I love animals and have always felt upset about any harm coming to them. A few weeks ago, I finally committed to being a vegetarian. I am chagrined that I didn’t make this choice many years ago; I guess I thought it would be complicated (it’s not), but there is no excuse to participate in a system that destroys animals for their flesh.
—Guest Evie

Respect for nature, eco friendly!

I became vegetarian because the thought of eating animals that have just as many characteristics as your pet dog or cat disgusted me. For instance, a baby pig is more intelligent than a 3 year old human toddler. The slaughterhouse conditions are deplorable, and the quality of life these voiceless innocent animals have to suffer is absolutely awful. Humans function better WITHOUT meat anyways! It takes the stomach 4 hours to process one piece of meat, while a mere 30 minutes to process an entire salad. The nutrients from vegetables and grains are instantly absorbed by the body, where as the protein in meat has to be broken down for hours in order to get remotely any value from it. The fat and cholesterol build up in your arteries as well, and you’re left with little benefits from a lot of work you’ve put your body through. A vegetarian diet also has proven cancer preventing benefits, and veggies have a longer lifespan. Watch Forks Over Knives on Netflix…and kick meat to the curb! :)
—Guest audrametzler

Love for the animals

I’m 13and made up my mind to become a vegetarian for the love I have for the animals:)
—Guest Veggie hippie girl

Vegetarian

I grew up eating meat. I’m Hispanic & that’s all we eat. But in my heart I always knew I was going to become a vegetarian. It wasn’t hard at all. I don’t crave meat , to think of eating meat makes me sick to my stomach. Animal slaughter is the reason why I’m a vegetarian. I watched a video called “EARTHLINGS” & that broke my heart into pieces. Im happy that I am a strong person because in America that’s what EVERYONE EATS. I am more energized & I feel amazing :)
—Guest Meleny

Vegan So Young

I am a vegan and am only 13. In yr 5 I became white meat vegetarian, that only lasted for a few months becuase in yr 6 I went full veggo, then at the beginning of yr 7 I went off egg so the only animal product I consumed was milk and now (not even a yr later) at the end of yr 7 I am a full vegan! I don’t eat chocolate, ice-cream, bacon, egg, yoghurt, cake, take away. etc. Most teenage girls my age find those foods IMPOSSIBLE to live without. For me it’s easy. People think I am going to get sick and die, not if you’re on the right diet! Animals and their rights are a big part in my life, I will never eat ANY animal products again, and when I am older I want to help to stop animal cruelty.
—Guest Roze

For DIETING!

Right after I started to eat only vegetable, I’ve lost 5kg. at least it is working for me.
—Guest Vege in Japan

Love For Life

I was reflecting and started to see the beauty in all of life, and decided that I cannot be in any way involved in the deaths of other sentient beings. About a month ago I went vegetarian and am currently working towards veganism. Because Might is NOT Right!
—Guest sroberts8844

Health and weight

Six months ago I read a book about how animal products, particularly animal fats, affect the body and decided to give vegan a try. I felt noticeably better in a few days and have lost 50 pounds. I miss some things, cheese, milk on my cereal, being able to eat out anywhere (restaurants are so meat and dairy oriented) but feeling better keeps me committed. When I feel weak, I look at my fingernails. A month after changing my eating, I noticed that my new fingernails were white and clear and the older nail was yellow and dirty looking by comparison. When I look at my nails I remember watching the yellowed part grow out and think that they reflect the change in my body. I am cleaner inside. Actually, eating animals has always felt wrong. Eating what animals produce didn’t bother me till I learned about the living conditions of most “producing” animals. I feel good about not being a part of that any more. All in all, it’s been a positive change
—neljaz

Why Am I A Vegetarian?!

Well I studied about animal cruelty last year because that was my group project and I saw some PETA videos and it’s sad how animals were treated, the process to become our food so I decided to become vegetarian. But it is really hard to start eating more vegetables, like carrots. I don’t mostly like carrots. And meat, well my family eats meat once or twice a week. Dairy stuffs OMG. That is the hardest one for me because I drink milk and use some for some food like cereal, cakes and cheese. And the chocolates too. They contain milk and I Love Chocolates! But I Got To Leave Those Stuffs Not Try Because Try Is Not Enough. And Also I Am Doing This For Me Myself And For The Animals! Wish Me Lucks With This Peoples!
—Marquissa

Vegan

I can’t stand to see animals die .I watched a big truck go by with 26 cows going to slaughter. I got sick to my stomach.
—Guest Kathleen

Why I feel good being vegetarian

Because, 1.We have no right to kill what we can’t create. 2. I’m civilized enough not to hurt others (animals, human beings). 3. I’m not so cruel as to eating animals just for taste. 4.I’m not animal to kill animals & lead my life. I’m a human. 4. I feel everything in this world is beautiful so decided not to destroy the beauty of nature, but to preserve it. 5. I’m an Indian; we have a rich cultural heritage. Ours is one of the richest civilizations in the world. Here some of us are civilized enough not to kill animals just for sake of our tongue.
—Guest Vikas (Vicky)

The highest form of human development

Living without Killing for sake of food is highest form of development of human beings. The human body is designed by God to have veggie food only. Those who eat meat have sharp nails, sucks water like lion, have sharp teeth. Human body does not have any of these characteristics. The way human has right to live and we do not kill other human being, likewise, one human being does not kill other animal for sake of food. God made so many vegetables, fruits, cereals and many things to eat. Let us put ourselves in place of animal and undergo feeling of slaughtering then we realize, how it is inhumane to kill other animals for the sake of food. If another person kills your dog for sake of food, how do you feel as dog as become part of your family? So we have no rights to take away animals from their family. Only in India, Saints have developed society which lives on Vegetarian food. Gujarat, Rajasthan are such states and we respect animals and we treat Cow as mother of Indian society. Regards. Limbachi
—Guest Bharat Limbachia,Indian

Shock encounter

In the fall of 2008 I was in a car accident with my wife, we collided with a wallaby that was jumping across the road. The grizzly sight of the dying beast put me off meat all together.
—Guest William

Why am I Vegatarian?

I think cause i heard you can live longer. I would like that. It makes you more healthier and you have more energy. And cause I hate that I was eating animals. Very cruel. I like being a vegetarian.
—Guest Anna Hill

Animal lover way to much

I am a full fledge animal lover and I have been vegetarian for over a year I don’t miss eating meat at all it actually makes me sick to even look at it I do feel much better
—Guest Dawn

Why I became vegetarian

I saw a PETA video but I have to try to stop eating cheese.
—Guest deefelt28

Why

Initially it was as a reaction to the deplorable conditions animals were raised in. However it’s never far from my mind, and I can now relate ideas of parasitism (in most farming situations) where one species quality of life is greatly reduced for the benefit of another. I can understand this in the places where survival is still a primary concern, but not in first world countries where food is readily available, taken for granted and wasted on a huge level. Life is cheap, but suffering is insurmountable and our ability to ignore and/or not care is detestable. We’ve contained and distanced ourselves from an inherently primal act and have the nerve to think it’s civilized.
—Guest DavidLawes

Might is not right.

Having chosen to be a vegetarian then transitioning to a vegan lifestyle over 40 years ago, it still amazes me how my omnivore friends just cannot leave it alone. I often avoid answering the question, why I became a vegetarian, because that question is more often asked by ominvores and they do not really want to know, and they then become defensive when you tell them. My health was my initial reason, heart disease due to bad diet, is a major cause of death and health issues in my family. Then as I weaned myself off of animal products, my health improved as did my awareness of the beauty of all life that surrounds us. My tendencsies of aggressive behavior became more and more controllable. I love animals and see within them a desire to live and love. There is nothing that can justify taking a life simply to satisfy my palate? Life is precious and just because humans are mightier than the animals they prey upon, does not make the principle that “might is right”, right.

it makes me pure…and avoid ignorance, food at subtle level made of sattva(purity & knowledge),raja(action & passion) & tama(ignorance & inertia),in nonveg. content of tama is more

Earthlings

I watched about five minutes of a documentary called earthlings. also watched a couple of clips of this video which is available on you tube… and never ever want to touch meat again… try watching it, it will break your heart..
—Guest panoochie

I became a vegetarian because

I’ve always been fiercely against animal cruelty. I just find that I could actually live happily without meat – also I rarely eat it before I was a vegetarian.
—Guest Raan

I’m vegetarian

I am 15 and I Wanted to become healthier and I wanted to Become more alive. Ive been pondering on it for a while and I finally made the switch. I’ve eaten Meat ALL my life and its Hard for me. My Family eats nothing but meat and I’m constantly surrounded by it. Its a challenge but I’m striving for it. Wish me luck

A vegan (plant-based) diet because…

I have MS, pain stopped, slipped (ate a pop tart) yesterday for the first time in over a month and now in pain, eating like this is worth the pain being gone!!!!
—Guest Dodi

I’m a new vegan

I just started a few days ago after watching Peta videos. I come from a strong Mexican household and I grew up eating tons of meat. Suddenly I’m so grossed out with the meat after watching all that stuff. I’m disgusted with those so called humans that do that to animals. I AM NOT A fan of animals AT ALL. I’m not an animal lover I’m very afraid of animals. Even with my background I have stopped eating meats all together. I have even lost some weight without even trying. I’m trying to get people I know to watch the videos and go vegan with me. I already got a few on board. I just can’t believe those poor animals. I wish my family knew what those animals go through to become their food. But I’m grateful they respect my beliefs. GO VEGAN!!!
—Guest Haylaymah :)

Why vegetarian

I’m researching the possibilties of going vegetarian or vegan and so far most of the logs I’ve read appear to be from young teenagers who tend to be very idealistic ar rhat age.Any older folk out there who could point to benefits other than better skin?
—Guest Patrick

I am vegetarian because

I stand for animal rights…I want to tell everyone that animals have the right for ethical treatment.
—Guest Vanessa Ferido

For Better Health

I made the decision to switch because I was overweight and borderline hypertensive. I’m now on my 12th day of eating only whole grains, plants, fruits and legume based foods, and I have lost 6 weight, my blood pressure is back to normal and my resting heart rate has dropped to 50 – this is all combined with exercise. I’m also much stronger…
—Hamiltone

I am a New Vegetarian

Suddenly I became grossed out after watching Food, Inc. I can’t imagine eating meat again because I visualize the animal when thinking about eating meat or chicken.
—Guest Lisa Taylor

It’s already a Month!

I’ve been a vegetarian for over a month now, and I don’t even notice. Not eating meat is so easy, considering I was the type of person who liked my steak medium rare. I became a veggie after seeing the cruelty in slaughter houses via the internet, and thought it was so gruesome and inhumain how they “make our food.” I’m only 15 and love animals of all kind. I mainly started because of my love for animals but quickly realized how much my health increased. I did research and found that you could sometimes get diabetes or a heart disease from the processing in meat. I feel more active, awake, alert and healthier now. A lot of my friends and friends of my family are veggie or vegan and give me recipes all the time. It’s a way better lifestyle, and I’m so glad I adopted it
—Guest Samantha R

Why I am a vegetarian

Becoming a vegetarian is not as difficult as many people think it would be…. You can eat everything except animals! I can still eat Chinese takeout and pizza and tons of things people seem to assume they’d miss if they made the switch.. but I am much healthier and have even considered a liberal vegan diet.. The way animals are treated to become your food is terrible, and I don’t eat them for this reason. Also, the amount of food it takes to feed the cattle that becomes food could feed many more people than the cow itself. After being encouraged to try it for two weeks by a friend of mine who is a vegan, I discovered that I loved the change and encourage everyone to do the same- try it for two weeks and see if it’s a good choice for you!
—Guest B :)

Why I am a Vegetarian

Today is my first official day of being a vegetarian. I mainly am making the switch for health reasons. I want to be a good example for my children so if they see me adapt to a healthy dietary regimen they will jump on board-without force that is! I also read that many populations are afflicted with preventable diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease and abstaining from meat can reverse alot of damage that you have have done to your body. I also plan to combine this with proper exercise as I believe in overall good health not just the lack of meat. I encourage everyone to do research first because there are unhealthy vegetarians! Don’t eat tons of salt filled pasta, pizzas, chips, soda, etc. This is a great change for me and I hope it will be for you.
—Guest Jinnah RN

Veggie

I became a vegetarian after cutting out every kind of meat from my life at a steady pace. I realised that meat is not at all necessary and that my body would be better off without it. I am veg for the environment, for the animals, and for myself.
—Guest escalante

Because…

I have always found meat as being gross so I just never ate it. Now I’m 16 and I’m starting to experiment with being vegan. It is a huge commitment and I love every second of it (:
—Guest Molly Willard

I am thinking about becoming vegetarian

I am thinking about it for health reasons. I have IBS and possible ulcers and I am just so tired of the pain. I don’t expect being vegetarian to solve my problems, but it will help (or should!). I am not planning on totally cutting out dairy products but am planning on switching to either soy or lactose-free milk.
—Guest Andrea

I became a vegan because…

I’ve been struggling with bulimia and somewhat anerexia, and it’s driving me insane so when I read about being a vegan, it just sounded like a healtheir lifestyle and it could help me get over being anerexic and bulimic
—Guest Rebecca

I’m a vegan because…

I’m a vegan because I really feel bad about the animals, & I feel bad about eating meat & dairy products after watching slaughterhouses, its a cruel way the way they kill the animals.
—Guest private

For My health and the environment

I can’t bear to think of eating meat or consuming dairy after having read The China Study. I do it for myself and ultimately for future generations. The number of reasons not to consume meat products from an environmental standpoint maker decision clear. I am happy to be meat free!
—Guest DonnaV

Why I became a Vegeterian

I lost my close cousin in 1995 .I was asked to be take only vegetarian food for 16 days as part of the Hindu ritual. I never took non-veg. food after that. I lost weight and my skin took a pinkish glow. My Lipid and Diabetes profile was well controlled. I need not require my anti Hypertensive Medicine anymore. Being a Doctor, I was much pleased that I am not involved in the killing of other living creatures for my food. Presently my diet contains fruit and vegetable juice, with nuts and raisins for breakfast. Legumes and Mushroom for lunch, and whole meal bread with fruits for my dinner. I am sixty years of age now. I have become more spiritual now.
—Guest Gunasagaran Ramanathan

Why did you become veg?

I become vegetarian when my dog died, I loved Snowy very much, I just gone into vegetarian meals that night he died at 7.12pm, and since then I have been in this diet all the time, even when I traveled on business trips…
—Guest Snowy

Why I became vegetarian

My daughter was diagnosed with Percocious Puberty at a very young age so I began doing research on use of hormones in food. Through my research, I found out how the meat industry is run and how it treats the animals. I’m not what you would consider an animal activist, but I was so turned off by the information I gathered that I haven’t eaten meat since. I became vegetarian overnight. I did my research on nutrition and picked a day and stuck with it. I definitely eat a better variety of vegetables and fruits and think my diet has never been healthier. I do get the occasional desire to have a burger or a piece of steak, but have not given in to it. Chicken, pork and products made with these things do not interest me in the least. I think it’s been a very positive change in my life and hopefully on my environment.

trying vegetarian

I’m reading all these articles and everything and it makes me want to try it. I first had the idea when one of my friends told me he was a vegetarian. So I’m trying. :)

for the animals, the planet and myself

The treatment of animals to satisfy mans desire to eat meat is repulsive. Animals suffer greatly at the hands of man and in the name of progress and higher profits. I also believe it is shameful for our government to subsidize the meat industry the way they do, it is not allowing the market to be driven by the natural forces of supply and demand. The resources used to create meat for human consumption is severe on its drain on our planet and will be our undoing. We are blind in America thinking we are living the dream when in actually we are simply postponing the nightmare that will eventually come. We are treating this planet like trash pile and the meat and dairy industries have done the most damage, but only because we allow them to. For my health, I feel better than I ever have, the more I learn and do vegetarian and vegan, the better I feel. I thought meat was necessary to sustain life, that is wrong and I am healthier than I ever have been.
—molejr

We are naturally vegetarian…

Check other animals , their body types, jaws, teeth structure , stomach, toungue, meat eaters suck water with tongue, their intenstine, compare and confess eating non-veg is one bad habit we created like smoking.

I was 16

For me, it was largely a biology teacher, Mr. Munson, who I respected for his kindness, intelligence, and integrity. When I found out he was vegetarian, I thought I would give it a try. The more I’ve researched vegetarianism, the more it makes sense: for my health, for my spirit, for my family, for the animals, and for our environment. It has inspired me to create a veg web site to help others: Eco-Eating at www.brook.com/veg

Vegetarian Newbie

I usually try to have some kind of healthy smoothie with fresh fruit, maybe yougurt or soymilk. Im just starting the vegetarian thing, one because I think it is healthier, and two because I think it is more humane. I just put a cup of soymilk (my preference is Westsoy either unsweetened or sweetened, and they even have a low fat version, organic too) and a banana, or handful of berries, and some ice…in my blender…yum! You could even throw some wheat germ in there too!

From Vegetarianism to Veganism

I decided to be vegetarian when I was 16 years old, 17 years ago, but then, 3 months ago, I watched: Meet your milk and realized it was almost so cruel and horrible I could barely accept it any more, that´s the main reason I became vegan and I feel even better, happier and my conscience is clearer. It´s no ethic to be blind and deaf while a lot of innocent creatures die innecesarily, every single day. I am a Radiohead fan and, therefore, the fact that the singer is a proud vegan, makes me feel so happy about it. Go vegan and vegetarian!, we may and can change the world, step by step. We make the (GREAT) difference every day!. Sorry for my english.
—Guest Malvyn

Why I am vegetarian

Meat is just something else I don’t need, and the bonus is you’ll lose weight, eat light; stay light!!!
—Guest Salvaje

Love of animals

I have never eaten red meat and have been vegetarian for roughly 5 years. Simply because I hate the way animals are treated, tortured and slaughtered. I love animals and would never want to eat one. I love being vegetarian. Plus I believe it’s healthier. I’m 20, no one in my family is vegetarian, none of my friends are, but i love seeing lots of people seeing sense (:
—Guest Janey

Why I am a Vegan now…

It all started when I found out my friend Stephen was a vegan and has been for about 3 years. He said he felt better and looked healthier doing so. So I went to try it out and soon enough, it has its pros and cons. I miss meat, I still crave it lots of times… but then I think about all the bad fat I lost from doing so and how much healthier I am because of it. I thank you Stephen for showing me “the way” lol
—Guest Katrina R

Why i’m a vegitarian

I’ve never really liked meat in the first place besides chicken and fish and when I found out one of my cousins ended up becoming vegetarian, I wanted to know more. So I kept asking her about it wanted to know how hard it was and since I have epilepsy I was worried it would effect me, but it def doesn’t. I had her support considering my mom hated the idea and I’ve been a vegetarian for over 3 years now!
—Guest -Chantel

Why I am now a veg?

Vegi worshipper because I feel much more vibrant, and alive and no longer want to eat the ones I am in love with. Amen. Is spiritual, and physically linked for me.
—Guest Leslie S.

Why I went vegetarian

I believe everyone has a right to live. (including animals) Should an animal scarifie its life to make our appetite go away? I don’t think so. They too need to have the right to live. It’s so simple.. “Live and let live”! after all we are one big family in the animal kingdom and we humans (so called the greatest superior animal), sure can do without any innocent creature’s meat.
—Guest amen-ra

Why I chose to go veg

when I was younger…about 7 or 8, I remember eating spaghetti at home and having a huge rush of guilt, disgust and anger as I ate. I ran to the toilet and threw up and begged my parents to not make me eat meat anymore. they did not listen and said i had to. I have been vegetarian for the last 3 years, since moving out of home. As soon as I moved out I stopped eating meat. And i regret that I did in the past. It is unfair to make your children follow your values when their minds and ideas are so strong at a young age. I will be vegetarian for life now and am on my way to going vegan. Cutting back bit by bit. I can’t stand people’s inability to correlate pain with animals…it saddens me strongly.

learning to be vegan

I always loved food and still love it but when it started showing in pounds on my body I just woke up from my dreams and I started learning about new ways of living life and eating food. I simply love eating vegan cause there is so much chance to experiment………and you can eat your way towards a healthy life
—Guest i am learning to be vegan

I love myself & my health for my family

Well I am 21 years old, in April I had my gallbladder removed. Since my surgery I had no problems recuperating so I had my normal diet of red meat, dairy products and everything I could get my hands on so since I had no problems I kept my eating habits but in the long run it started to give me gastro intestinal problems therefore I ended up in the hospital with a colitis, an liver inflammation and colon inflammation. So seeing that my diet gave me problems I decided to change it because I have a daughter and I need to be there for her but most important healthy.
—Guest My health

my reason

the reason why i became a vegetarian is because i care about animals. It just breaks my heart to animals get tortured. Plus when i was little Survivor made me realize how disturbing it is to eat meat. Veggys and fruits are all you need to be healthy. And i suggest you take my advice before its too late. Please join me as we get rid every meat eater in this world.

Because I love all creatures great and small.Animals are my friends and always will be.

Love of Animals

I became a vegetarian at the age of 17 upon the realization that I never wanted to harm an animal…33 years later…haven’t changed my desire or way of life. And when it became clear that factory farming and the destruction of our environment were intrinsically linked, I was even more determined to live a life free from killing animals.
—Guest Valerie

Health is Wealth

I happened upon the Vegan way of life 3 years ago when I read the book “Skinny Bitch”. I have been studying and reading for over 30 years and have been creating the most fabulous recipes. I do not just rely on one persons opinion but after reading so many many factual articles and books I am convinced. Any meat is bad for you and that includes any type of animal seafood. It didn’t hurt to see the video Meet your Meat on the Peta website. Although I could not watch the entire video I got the message and it hurt my heart to think that mankind is so cruel to the animals we share this earth with.
—Nalukea53

Undigested Red Meat

I had heard that by the time a man got like 65 years old, he has at least 30 pounds of undigetsted read meat in his bowels. Ain’t that some crap? That made me stop eating meat.
—Guest Toot Toot

Vegan for Health Reasons

I find the rest of the posts quite fascinating, but the reason I have gone vegan is because I suffer from Multiple Sclerosis. While the mainstream medical community does not necessarily promote a vegan diet as a cure to the disease, I have read numerous personal testimonies on the benefit of omitting meat and dairy from the diet. I have been eating vegan for the past three months and I feel better than I ever have. I am currently symptom free and loving it. My desire to live a normal life and be “there” for my family is MY motivation for eating healthy.
—Guest VeganColorado

Why I became a vegetarian

I became a vegetarian for health issues. I’ m 17 and just started a month ago and I love it.. There are so much healthier options when your a vegetarian. I always used to be depressed when I ate fatty foods and meat. Now that I’m a vegetarian working to be complete vegan I cant help but smile everyday! :) Jared Leto actor/musician inspired to be fit and healthy so he played a role in it to. I’m proud to be a vegetarian but I’m still working on milk im not a fan of soy milk
—Guest FaviolLb

On and off again vegetarian. Finally on!

For about 20 years, I have been on and off vegetarian. I have made it permanent just last week when I ate a sandwich with meat that upset my stomach so badly. I have a slew of stomach issues (Gastroparesis, GERD and Colitis) and when I go veg, I feel much better! I am also an animal lover and environmentalist as well, so it is a perfect choice for me. Eventually I will go vegan, but I must do it slowly on account of my stomach. Blessings to all who have made the change. Together we will heal the planet!

Animal Breeding Practices

Though I’d greatly cut back on the amount of meat I ate for health reasons, it was when I learned about animal breeding practices that I went vegetarian. I remember that day, standing in a bookstore, flipping through Temple Grandin’s Animals in Translation, being horrified to learn about a pig breeder who found out what the male pigs liked so he could get semen from them. Surely this is some badly run anomaly of a farm, I thought, but after researching it, I found that due to [fill in the blank with excuses] cost effectiveness, a lack of labor, insurance requirements, etc., factory farms don’t allow animals to mate naturally. Instead, humans have sexual contact with them to get semen from the male and inseminate the female. This is perverse, and it absolutely floored me that there was no outcry. Especially due to my religion, it bothered me. There is a lot of other abuse that goes on, but that was the shocker that opened my eyes. I just can’t in good conscience support that.
—Guest Julie K.

Why I became vegetarian, and now vegan.

If you are unable to eat yourself, your brother, what rule in society should say I am to devour the flesh and muscle of those who cannot help themselves? There is not a problem of creation, it is just we contain enough resources this modern day to not NEED to kill and eat the beings who are unable to defend themselves.
—Guest Anon

Am a veg

I became a vegetarian when I snatched a video of sir Paul McCartney talking about animals been slaughtered it was called if slaughter houses had glass Walls everyone would be a vegetarian and it was so upsetting for me to see how brutal these intelligent creatures were been treated I cried for hours and have never eaten meat since and I feel a 100 times better !!!!!! X
—Guest Maria

Why I became a vegetarian…

I became a vegetarian because I believe, like humans, all animals were created equal…you wouldn’t eat your dog so why would you eat a cow? Mass production in the meat industry is a terrible thing and you really can’t trust the meat anyways as it contains additives and fillers. Meat is very unappetizing to me…when I see a burger or chicken I can’t help but think, “this used to be a living, breathing creature!”
—Guest A.b.

I’m a Vegetarian because…

In my AP human geography class we saw this video called “Food Inc.” about the industrialized food and they showed a slaughter house as well… It was very graphic and distrubing and since that day, eight months ago, I vowed to eat anything that once had a pulse.

Animal lover

I always used to love animals ever since I was a child. I could never stand the concept of killing animals just for the sake of our taste buds. I wanted to be a vegetarian when I was 10 but my parents being great non veg lovers didn’t let me turn into a vegetarian. But after a lot of protest I finally became a vegetarian at the age of 14. I am allergic to milk so my mom got worried that I may suffer from protein deficiency if I stop eating meat. She said that I have two options either eat yummy meat dishes or yucky protein biscuits. I chose the latter(protein supplements). My friends laugh at me for this but I feel proud of my sacrifice. I urge everyone to turn vegetarian stop killing poor cute innocent animals. I feel killing and eating animals is like killing my own friends and siblings and then eating their body parts . Please guys have a heart and go vegetarian.

Just beause of one simpel change. Try it you never know you might like it. I love being Vegan.
—Guest eathshelper

How can you eat what you are made of?

I can’t believe that I ate what I am for many, many years. I might as well have eaten humans made of Blood, cells, flesh, etc… just like animals. I became vegan after I lost a dog I loved very much. I promised Bugsy that I would respect animals and never eat them again. I wish churches, mosques, temples, etc, would start teaching their members that God created animals just like he created us and therefore we all have the right to live and die a natural death (old age, sickness or accident) but certainly NOT EATEN.
—Guest Mariama

An end to my demand for cruelty

My husband showed me a PETA vegetarian starter kit he had stumbled upon and we found “Meet your meat” on Youtube. We became dedicated vegetarians almost immediately after seeing that video. Since then, I have seen many more videos exposing conditions on all manner of farms from free-range to factory style, as well as abuse on farms and in slaughterhouses, transport and inhumane slaughter (is there any other kind?) Facing up squarely to what is being done to animals in the name of culinary pleasure can be painful, but it is necessary in order to stop abusing animals commercially. Meat is not necessary. I’ve been a vegetarian for a year and a half and I’ve been vegan for nearly a year and I feel great! New to being vegan

Hello to all , I’m a newcomer, I started on the 14th and am going good do far, I choose this path because I am an animal lover and also for myself, it makes me feels good doing this, slowly but surely I will prevail. Plus I love fruits and salads ^_^

I feel like a new person !!! :)

I became a vegan after waching an inspiring video of my favorite band. He said that to eat animal flesh is basically eating human flesh , and that we weren’t put on this earth to indulge on animals , but to love and treat them as apart of us. I really felt what he was saying , so now I’m a vegan !!! I’m only 14 and I feel great and so clean:) it would be awesome if every one can become vegan or vegetarian!! So we can all live in harmony with the world and our animal friends!!!

it worked before, time again.

I decided to become a vegetarian for health reasons. I figured this would be the best way. I gave up red meat & pork years ago, so now its just the chicken & turkey I’ll be leaving behind. I did it before for 1 week & it felt very good. Especially to my digestive system. I’m trying to get my husband there but that’s gonna be a task because he loves meat. Well, we know that prayer changes things. Be blessed & know you were divinely created.

“OPRAH” show last wk on SLAUGHTERHOUSES

I have always felt sad, guilty, and like a hypocrite for eating meat, after getting a poodle, and seeing his emotion, love in his eyes, I truly believe animals are just like us-they want to live too! feel fear, and are helpless against man’s technology. And the way factories are producing animals just to abuse and slaugther them, for their own capitalistic gain, is DISGUSTING, to me. I wish It would stop! I heard on lady on Oprah Show say, “How can I look into the eyes of a cow, and say, ‘your pain, your fear are less important than my appetite”. That really haunted me, those words. I can’t seem to want a chicken sandwhich again, I think , just for one set of drum sticks, one chicken has to die, and why? we have other sources of protein, and it’s also an oxymoran to me, to say, HUMANE SLAUGHTERING. And the other thing, is how do we justify killing any living thing and yet put our lives as more important? I salute all here who also decided to join. Myself as well.

why i become vegetarian???

i have been suffering with indigestion and gastric pain, acid reflux and caused so much heartburn and uneasy almost everyday for 3 years. I finally chose to become vegetarian, eating only lots of vegetables, alkaline fruits and whatever alkaline food only. It helped so much, besides medication taking pantoprazole 20mg and omeprazole 20mg occasionally, my stomach acid is gone 80%, I lost approx. 5kg in a month as I totally stopped eating meat and seafood. I drink plenty of water everyday not even any cola or soft drinks. I have enough sleep and I workout 6 times a week practising yoga, swimming and golfing. I am a much better person and healthier now. I am happy to be a vegetarian!

Looking for a Cure

When I was diagnosed with Hypertension, my M.D. put me on medication. At the time, I was also suffering from obsessive overeating, panic attacks, high cholesterol, and depression (which I eventually took medication for also). I took the medication for 8 years, since I was 23 years old. I noticed I was not getting “better.” I felt horrible everyday. I was 100 lbs overweight, although constantly dieting. Little did I know, I was feeding my body the wrong foods. When I realized this, I jumped on the internet, bought some books, and changed my diet. The more I read, the more inspired I was to not only improve my health, but to improve everything around me through my health. It was a win, win situation. My life is now engulfed with animal rights, being eco friendly, striving for a more sustainable planet. Proud to say, I am a raw food vegan. I am cured of all my ailments (AND selfishness) and off all medication. Life is better vegan. P.S. My husband and children are vegan too.
—Guest Jessica

A process

I started a little at a time as a result of getting a healthier diet and controling my weight after losing 100+ pounds. First I gave up beef which was very easy, then chicken also really easy, I think it was so easy because I was only eating such small portions of these it was really not hard. Fish took a little longer, but was only eating that twice a week or less. The push came from my yoga practice…. Loved the lighter feeling, non harming and less of an impact on the earth. Figured that if a large animal can survive on plants why could’t a small person? My practice took off from my decision, Thinking there is no turning back. Still make family meat based meals, but would love it if they only ate meat when dining out so I could just cook one meal!
—Guest Yoga girl

Designer’s Diet

I believe God made me and so I chose the plant based diet that HE gave us from His book the bible. I have been truly blessed and enjoy good health. Some years ago before I changed to all plant based I would have some dairy and always had trouble with my tonsils. When I changed to only plant foods my tonsils has never been in pain again! Praise the Lord

Why I became cruelty free

I once saw my family slaughter a chicken in front of us children and as it cried for its life it escaped with the head merely intact an blood was spluttering all over. This gruesome image stayed in my head but only changed from animal eater to vegetarian in 2007 after June holidays then after being comfortable with my choice I became vegan and been vegan for 2 years. I live in South Africa an its so common for families to slaughter animals like nothing. Im a uwc(university of the western cape) student now 1st year and healthy and happy no sickness in sight.
—Guest vegani 4life

I’m a converted vegan too!!

I converted to a vegetarian when I was 16 and now at the age of 20 I converted to vegan. Loads of people discourage me, ridicule me but I’m adamant with my decision. I’m a vegan because my body isn’t a graveyard.
—Guest sugandha

Why am I a vegetarian???

I was raised as a ‘meat-eater’. I admit I was NOT a big meat eater. Hamburger was CHEAP to feed to 6 kids :) Steak was MAYBE once a year when we had butchered our own cow. We raised pigs and chickens, sheep and a cow or two, rabbits also…. I KNOW where MEAT comes from :) I am 53 yrs old and have been a vegetarian for the past 20 years. I cannot ABIDE the factory farming techniques. I cannot STAND to see BLOOD near my FOOD. I KNOW farmers, I am NOT ‘faulting’ them. I am just choosing MY PATH of ..well… “Never eat ANYTHING with a FACE “:) I am in PERFECT HEALTH :) I have NEVER been to the hospital or needed treatment for ANY illness. Yes, I have had colds here and there. Also the flu. Nothing MAJOR. I am taking ZERO medication except for the approximately 24 vitamins I have taken DAILY since I was 20 yrs old :) I BELIEVE in the health benefits of a diet containing FEW or ZERO animal products.
—cheryllynnsalyers

Vegetarian Choice

I became a vegetarian in 1975 for many reasons: financial, health, compassion for animals, eating lower on the food chain to have less impact on the environment, and for the challenge that is my motto: The Good Taste of Health.

Marie

I have diabetes and my doctor was threatening to put me on insulin. I had read a book on reversing diabetes (by being vegan) by Dr. Neal Barnard. It changed my life. I started out originally at 170 lbs and lost 25. When I became vegen I lost my last 25 pounds very easily and am now down to a weight I never thought possible (120 lbs) I am no longer on 3 diabetes medications. My blood sugar is normal for a person with diabetes. (6.3) I was also on cholesterol reducing drug (Lipitor) and was able to give that up. I also gave up processed foods (except for sprouted grain bread and vegan cheese and everything white (sugar, flour potatos etc.) I exercise almost every day. I have been vegan for almost 2 years. I can honestly say becoming vegan is one of the best and most important decision I ever made. Marie
—Mariefunfit

It sort of came together….

I was just 30, had moved house after separating. After 6 weeks I hated handling raw meat. My ex had talked about going veggie but hadn’t. I then got sent on a course to Oxford (I’m in the UK) with about 10 others from Swindon inc. the guy I shared an office with, and people from London. The last night, instead of revising we were in a disco at 3.00am we asked one of the girls why she was veggie. That weekend I decided to try it and on the Monday at work I told Steve – and he’d talked to his wife & they were doing so & the kids also wanted to. That was May ’78. I never looked back, I eat a more varied diet, have never had a week off sick. I discovered Mexican food, enjoy veggie curry etc, have cooked 7 course meals for 8 non-veggies. Thank’s Lynne. Didn’t know until then that my Gran, a prof. cook who always ate later was a veggie and that@ 91 yrs old a hospital had forced her to eat meat after a broken hip, 3 yrs before I converted. I should be vegan, am moving that way but slowly.
—alanrothwell

Why I became a VEGAN

I prefer to have my food separated. I eat one item at a time before eating another. With meat, that doesn’t always happen. On a girls weekend 18 years ago and never much of a meat eater anyway, I braved the restaurant’s specialty and ordered a steak. When it arrived, the sight of blood pooling around the meat and then seeping insidiously into my garlic potatoes and green beans – turned my stomach. I haven’t eaten meat since that time.
—Guest sniffink9

Why I became A Vegeterian

I became a vegeterian at age 14 for 2 reasons. First, it had to do with the killing of animals. When I realized I could eat just as well without eating meat I was all for it. I think I also was going through a rebellious phase and wanted to make my mother mad! It’s been many years and I have had two children and still have not had meat since I was 14. I am one of the healthiest among my friends and family but I also excercise as well as eating a good diet. I don’t push it on any of my family or friends but my 20 year old daughter eats very little meat and seafood. I am not a “good” vegeterian I always say because I don’t experiment with alot of tofu and different ideas. I simply don’t eat meat or seafood. It works for me!
—Guest laxmom16

Accidental Vegetarian

In Feb of 2010, I fasted with a friend’s church, which called for not only being a vegetarian, but a vegan for 21 days. While fasting, I experienced little or no indigestion and my energy level was much higher. So much so, that I ran my first 5k! I continued to not eat meat or fish, but started back with dairy products and eggs. After a while, I discovered that I felt better not eating these products either. So, now I rarely them and I am training for my first 10 k!!!

Love of Animals

As a child, I never equated the meat in the grocery store with real, live animals. Of course, that changed. I was never able to reconcile killing animals to eat. I still can’t. But what really did it for me was watching TV programs that dealt with the horrific lives of commercial farming of animals. It makes caring about the welfare of humanity very difficult. The needless cruelty and death of animals so that humans can eat food that is unhealthy at best is reprehensible and unacceptable. But I can only be responsible for my own actions, therefore, I am a vegan.

Beyond Meet your Meat

Sure, animals are great, but what about humans? If we as a society insist on eating meat, which takes up so many resources and does so much damage to the environment, we will continue to reduce the quality of life for ourselves and the people who come after us. Though some people are compassionate enough to give up meat for animals’ sakes, the rest should realize that they must give up meat for the sake of children and grandchildren.
—Guest Monica

Why did I become Veb

I was always on and off meat. The longest I did was 90 days. However, 6 months ago I went on a fast and one of my petition from God was to not let me surrender to any food that was harmful to my body. I have not have any flesh protein or coffee since. Also, my body is just happier and treats me so much better. I cannot imagine myself eating meat again. Treat your body, the environment, and animals with dignity. The payoff is fantastic=:))
—Guest Winsie

I’ve always been a vegetarian

I have always been a vegetarian since I was born. My family used to eat meat but they stopped before I was born, so I’ve never had meat. The sight and smell of meat does make me feel sick though because I have never eaten it and I can’t understand why people like to eat other animals.
—Guest Kirpal

Why I Am a Vegetarian

As a child I was never fond of meat. In time I ate less of it. My love of animals and discovery of the truth of how they were raised and slaughtered sealed the deal for me. And of course it is less destructive to the Earth.
—Guest Geri

Why I’m Vegan

Factory farming – I am ashamed that I didn;t know before, that I considered myself a thoughtful eater because I was vegetarian. The stuff on the internet is hard to watch but once you know it, there’s no way to accept it and support it. I used to buy into the whole ‘live and let live’philosophy but now I feel that if people want to eat meat animals and milk and eggs, they should be aware of what they’re supporting. I beleive you can;t eat factory farmed products and call yourself an animal lover.
—Guest coulinjo

Why I Become Vegetarian/Vegan

I am 70 years old and I have been a vegetarian for 39 years and a vegan for 38 years. As a child I liked to eat fruits and vegetables. My family ate a lot of meat, so I was considered a little odd because I didn’t. When I grew up and began to cook meat, I didn’t like to handle it. While visiting a relative I ran across the book “Why Kill for Food”. It changed my life. I had a friend who was vegetarian and he began to talk to me about the harmful health effects of eating meat. Now at the age of 70 I see a lot of my friends and family suffering from multiple diseases and ailments, and I am in optimal health. I know I owe a lot of this to being a vegan and pursing a life of peace and blessings.
—Guest Bahtyah

Animals deserve to live too

I became a vegetarian because animals deserve to live the short amount of time they have on this earth. It is wrong to breed/catch or hunt and kill them for their flesh regardless of whether the killing is humane or not. There is so much other stuff to eat and enjoy so why go after poor defenseless animals?

I became a veg for health reasons. I feel healthier, am rarely sick and I’ll probably live a much longer and better life than my parents. Enviornment and animal benefits are just icing on the cake to me!

Why I don’t eat meat…

My wife decided to forgo eating meat in 2008; just before thanksgiving, it was. She decided not to eat red meat…white meat…ANY meat, and just eat a vegetarian diet, with dairy and fish, to see if it made any difference in her weight-loss efforts, and to see if she just felt better, in general. So, doting hubby that I am, I began to research alternative protein sources, alternative diets…diets that DIDN’T include the flesh of things with feet. The more I researched, the more information came up regarding the ills and abuses of factory farming. Meanwhile, my doctor was hounding me about my cholesterol and blood pressure. My conscience was hounding me because I’m 12 years older than my wife, and the thought of dying before her kinda sucks. Especially if I can do something about it. So…I adopted the “footless” diet, too. Call us Ovo-lacto-pescatarians. It’s done her well, it’s done me well, and it does the planet well.
—ta24jc

Why wouldn’t I eat vegan?

There are so many reasons why I choose to eat vegan…I feel better eating vegan — both my mind (conscience) and my body. I don’t think it is right for an animal to suffer for my pleasure. As well, comparing the energy costs in our depleted world, it simply makes sense to eat as low on the food chain as possible.

One Reason to Become, Many to Remain

Just over 20 years ago I read a book on world hunger. What I read shocked and saddened me but the chapter on the cost of raising cattle to feed humans changed my life. I have been a vegetarian ever since. That was my original reason but there are so many more: animal rights, it’s healthy, it’s ecologically sound and it encourages you to explore world cuisine.
—rosannegitto

For health

My journey as a vegetarian began when I wanted to lose weight. I wanted to make sure I did it in the healthiest way possible so I read many books. These books not only provided healthy eating tips but the beneficial aspects of being a vegetarian such as saving our planet and ending animal cruelty. After 10 years as a vegetarian I decided to make my diet my passion. I am currently studying to become a nutritionist and love everyday I choose to help myself, the planet and the animals.

Article on CNN

It was this article on CNN a year ago that turned my stomach so much that I couldn’t stand it: http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/03/09/china.animals/index.html?iref=allsearch As someone who lives with cats and dogs, I could no longer see any appropriate reason for any animal to die for my benefit. Cows, pigs, chickens and fish deserve to live and be happy the same way my dog and cats do – and from now on, nobody’s blood’s going to be on my hands.

why we are vegetarian

I honestly forget why I became vegetarian in the early years – probably some political thing. Then I had a daughter and she flat out hated meat which was fine b/c I never gave it to her although her father and other relatives tried. By the time I was married and had 4 more children we all had developed our own reasons for not eating meat. Ron and I were strictly against how meat was mass produced and the cruelty that goes along w/ how we obtain meat. All of that factored in to how unhealthy the meat was in the first place for you w/ all of the chemicals used to make the animals grow fast. My oldest who is now a teen doesn’t eat meat b/c she believes there is a way to stay slim if she remains meat free. My younger two daughters actually like meat, however it makes them sad to know what happens to the cows on the dairy farm up the road from our house in AZ. My 7 year old son hates meat b/c he can’t stand the idea of killing anything just to eat it. The baby is still nursing of course;).

For Love, to Spite Greed

When I get home I have two giant fur-balls bounding, leaping at me with eyes bright. I swear they’re smiling. When I hike I am dazzled by deer in the wood, the frolicking squirrel, the hunting great blue heron. A grazing cow in an emerald meadow has equal rights to life. So many have mentioned films of the killing floors; I have never been able to watch. Animals kill to eat, eat to live. Humans kill because of greed. Animals love unconditionally. Humans hate unconditionally. Turn a blind eye when it is convenient. So shameful, so sad. I hate to sound so dismal but are my words incorrect?
—LolaJoy

Part of the Earth

I want to be one with the earth and not processed food.
—thewaterbank324

Why I’m veggie

First I did it b/c a friend suggested it. I decided to do research so I could be informed on it. I saw “Meat Your Meat.” >.< I couldn’t stomach the idea of eating any animal ever again. Also, I’m an animal lover. I’ve had pets all my life & love them so much. I used to be overweight now I’m a healthy weight. I’ve never felt better in my life. :)
—Guest Rachel

Compassion for All Living Creatures

I first became a vegetarian 7 years ago. I did it for my health, the environment, and of course the animals…after watching a video on the meat industry I knew I could never eat an animal again. I cried thinking about the mass, mechanized murder of innocent creatures. When I recently learned that female dairy cows are forcibly impregnated and that their male calves are killed for veal, I knew that I had to stop consuming milk and dairy products as well. Furthermore, the dairy and meat industries produce something like 24 times as much greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation put together. Going vegan reduces your carbon footprint more than switching to a hybrid car. Also, there are so many resources that are wasted in the meat/dairy industry, such as land and water. It takes 5,000 gallons of water to produce 1 lb. of beef, and only 25 gallons of water to produce 1 lb. of grains. If everyone adopted a plant-based diet, there would be so much more food for everyone in the world
—Guest Anonymous

Why I became Vegan

Because it’s just not right. All the animals are tortured just for other people’s greedy apetites. Thos animals have just as much right to live in peace as we humans do. God put so much other healthier things on earth for us so everyone should put that to use. I became vegan quickly and i do not even crave meat plus I feel alot healthier. I love animals
—Guest Casey

Earthlings Documentry

I watched this documentary on animal treatment around the world. I have never cried so much in response to horrid, disturbing, embarrassing human behavior towards animals! They say people are just so ignorant that they’d rather enjoy their “meal” than know where that “meal” really came from. For that I want to say that I am embarrassed for the whole of human species. We are all living beings on this planet, but instead other living beings have become BIG BUSINESS for the government and the money hungry and greedy. It really makes you think, and well it isn’t that hard of a decision to make, we just need to get other people to make the same decision.

Ethics Health

When I was 14 years old, I watched a video called “Meet Your Meat”. Up until then I had eaten and enjoyed most meats, and had no moral issue with it. That was, until I saw how a slaughterhouse really works. I thought it was one quick, painless bullet. How wrong was I? I watched cows, pigs, sheep etc. screaming in agony and fear, trying desperately to run away and falling over in a pool of their own blood. I went vegetarian that day. Fast forward another three years, and I went to a local egg production farm, where I saw thousands of chickens that were “barn kept free range” stuffed into a single shed, with much on the floor an inch deep, and dead hens rotting everywhere. They were apparently happy, free range egg producing hens. There goes egg! Next was the discovery that to produce milk, cows are impregnated annually, and their calves are brutally slaughtered after bird. Goodbye milk! So now I am a very happy, healthy vegan. I lost 5 kilos within the first month, and feel great :)
—Guest Bella

Why did I become a vegetarian

For a very simple reason that I want to lose weight and eat healthy. I felt that I have been eating to much meat and fast food and I getting sick of it.
—Guest Kate Belmonte

Ew,

I am fifteen years old, and i have been a vegetarian for almost a year now. I believe that god (if you believe in god) or whoever else put us here, intended for us to all live together in peace. Think about it. We humans have teeth that are straight across, like cows, who only graze on grass and such. We do not have pointed teeth, like the animals that hunt for their pray. I have nothing against the people around me that eat meat, it’s their choice, and i respect that. But in return, i ask that you respect our choice but not eating meat for whatever reasons we all may have. It hurts to be called “stupid” for our deit. Eating meat is really very discusting, actually. ‘Meat’ can include the tail, head, feet, rectum and spinal cord of an animal. And did you know sausage can contain ground up intestines. How can anyone be sure that the intestines are empty when they are ground up? Do you really want to eat the content of a pig’s intestines? I believe vegetarianism is very healty.
—Guest Chrissy

Why I switched to being vegetarian

I switched because I don’t want to die from clogged arteries and bad health, I’m obese cause I loved fried chicken, beef taco etc… I have been eating what God intended us to consume to begin with now and feel full and satisfied with all variations of possibilities! It is wonderful! I didn’t believe I didn’t have meat withdrawal, and am learning a new appreciation for veggies fruit beans rice etc..I would tell anyone and everyone to make a switch!
—Guest lisa

My Meat Had a Face

One that looked horrified and confused in the slaughterhouse. My meat had a voice that screamed in agony that we couldn’t or didn’t care to interpret. My meat hadn’t had a normal life, and was killed for a selfish human habit. My meat was a living, breathing creature, with lungs and a heart and instinct. We are nothing but intelligent animals. How can we treat them like dirt? It’s cruel to raise someone just to die, don’t you think?
—Guest Emma

global thinking

the reason why i don’t eat meat in germany, is because nobody thinks about it, nobody knows, or wants to know what they are doing. this is ignorant and stupid. if everybody had visited a “meat factory” in their life, where millions of chicken are killed every day, i’m sure 70% would turn vegetarian. moreover there are loads of negative influences on our environment. if every human would eat as much meat as european or american people do there wouldnt be a square meter of forest left on this planet, because our food needs to be fed. then think of all the pollution, not only their natural gasses, also the emission from transport. especially when its not local. did you know, every passenger on a flight produces 4 tons of CO2? now think of what damage is done by a simple transport of goods (not only meat).
—Guest matteo

Who said we’re worth more then animals?

I became vegetarian b/c I love animals and I don’t eat my friends. If people really loved animals they would stop killing them to eat. There are plenty of other foods to eat. Just because animals can”t speak doesn’t mean we are worth more and can just breed them to give them a suffering painful cruel life and them kill them. Sometime people discust me it makes me wanna puke to think a person could be the cause for animal cruelty and support it!
—Guest animal lover

Why wouldn’t I?

In college I struggled with my weight and decided that I needed a lifestyle change. I started exercising a lot and eating 1200 calories a day. I lost 20 lbs but I was always hungry and was eating processed Lean Cuisines and Slimfast. I realized that wasn’t the way to go about it and started over, deciding to focus my concentration on putting good things into my body. I stopped eating processed food completely, but the one thing I worried about was meat. I knew that as a college student I couldn’t afford to buy organic/free range meats, and what I was eating was probably full of hormones and chemicals, along with the fact that the animals were maltreated. I stopped buying meat and would order it in restaurants from time to time until one day I decided I just didn’t want to do it anymore. I want to be proud of what I feed my body and know where it comes from and who is affected by it. I’ve now learned about the environmental benefits as well and have no plans of going back anytime soon!
—Guest Gillian

The best decision

I became a vegetarian at 8 years old because I loved animals; I didn’t want to eat them. I went vegan over three years ago, and at 31, I feel better than ever! It was the best decision I have ever made, and every day I am thankful for my health and the peace of mind that comes with a vegan diet.
—Guest Bryanna

Awareness about the meat industry

Being vegetarian brings a lot of benefits, but my decision to switch was mostly about the animals and how they are treated in the most awful ways. Once I started to be aware of the trip from farm to fridge for these gentle creatures, i had to stop, and I’m happy I did…
—Guest lbeal

Many reasons

The best way to help the environment is to first cut meat out of your diet. By not eating meat you make your vote saying no to all the energy, food, and resources used on animals who are born only to be slaughtered and sold by rich corporations. The industrial food industry is disgusting and american society has gotten to this point because of the consumers demand for a fast and fattening meal at a cheap price. I decided to go vegetarian for many reasons: my love for animals, my hatred for industrial food processing and unnatural food ingredients, my love for supporting local food suppliers as opposed to fast food corporations or big box retailers, and my condition of ulcerative colitis, which is a terrible health problem that is soothed by eating healthier organic fruits and vegetables. Get educated and live smarter and healthier. Society doesn’t want you to but you should want to for yourself, for the animals, and for the future of earth. Watch the documentary “Food, Inc.” for info

Meet Your Meat…

I have to say… well firstly I’m not a vegetarian.. yet. But a friend and I were just tossing around the idea of being a vegetarian and I decided to actually look into it. I came across this and then decided to watch the video meet your meat.. and ugh. I had no idea. I think this may have changed my life. :/ those poor animals.

I am a vegetarian because I am no more important that any other animal. I,unlike a carnivore can survive and more importantly, live healthier as a vegetarian.
—Guest sue

Why aprill made the switch.

Originally, I became a vegetarian because Christofer Ingle inspired me. Later, I realized the lives I’ve been saving recently. I’ve been a vegetarian for three and a half months now, and not only do I feel healthier, but I’m saving lives each day!!
—Guest aprilll

Well…

I’ve been a vegetarian since I was about 14 (I’m 19 now), and I recently made the transition to full-on veganism. My reason? Animal cruelty. I love animals more than I like most people, so just the thought of what goes on in slaughterhouses makes me depressed and nauseous. I can’t even look at a piece of meat anymore without feeling queasy.
—Guest Sam

WHY??

Well at first I just wanted to for a singer i like, who is Vegan, and then I watched Meet Your Meat on Youtube. It’s just horrifying what they do to these animals!! I suggest you watch this, its terrible. I just picture myself being those animals! I would hate it!
—Guest Carlye

Why I Went Veggie

I decided to stop with eating meat for a few reasons. First off i feel healthier. I also pictured myself from the perspective of the animal, absolute torture we put them through. Another reason is i wanted a way to be a part of something to help this planet out, it makes me feel good to conserve water.
—Guest Kaylee

I don’t eat my friends

I believe that everything has its right to life. I don’t feel it is fair to eat something that was defenseless in the loss of its life. I stopped eating meat when I was fourteen, I’m eighteen now and wish to go Vegan, however my wallet and lifestyle makes that difficult, so I do what I can, avoid buying products tested on animals, not eating meat etc. Without pressuring other people or judging them for eating meat I do try to spread the word.
—Guest janette

Why Lex is a vegetarian

My sister is a pescatarian and she keeps chicks for eggs and names them. I cannot envision eating meat anymore. It seems cruel. I also feel better when I do not eat meat. No kidding. And when I look at pictures of animals I just cannot do it. The poor things.
—Guest Lex

Health

After two years of research, and study, I decided that it would be best for me to chose a mostly raw vegan lifestyle. I am only 27 years old and think its time to do something about my health. I already have one organ failing, and chances are if I continue on this path I will be dead by the time I am 50. The more I read about what is added to our food, and how our meat is raised the more I realize it is in my best interested to go as minimally processed as possible. In a couple months or so I am going to introduce raw goats milk into my diet, and see how my body reacts. For me, this is a journey on what is best for my body and health, because I will be accountable to God for the choices I make
—Guest MandaRose

Born veggie

Never even tried eating animal flesh until I was maybe 10, and even when I did eat flesh I couldn’t honestly say I ever enjoyed it more than the veggie or soy alternatives. Flash forward and I’m at the close of 8th grade when I stumble across Meet your Meat and instantly decide to revert to the vegetarian ideals my parents raised me with. After a year or so of vegetarianism I made the switch to veganism due to inspiration from some friends who made the switch cold turkey(or tofurkey, rather :) ).
—Guest Henreh

Poor animals

The first reason was I wanted to lose a few pounds. So It has been three weeks since I have become a vegetarian. Three weeks later my skin looks amazing. Its not dry or oily. It has a dewy complexion like a child. I also feel alot better. I feel so bad for the animals that have to die so we can eat them. What if they killed us and we were in tiny cages think how scared we would be. :(
—Guest megan

Ii feel so helpless

Well, I read a few articles on PETA…. it really touched me because I myself am an animal lover…. it made me cry!!!! I decided since I cant do anything{{yet}},I’m gonna stop helping their business. I become a vegan… Thank God for groups that make people aware, because ignorance is really bliss. :(
—Guest lesley

Why I am vegetarian

Animal rights, the inhumane treatment at factory farms.
—Guest Dee

Making the rest the best!

Because it’s a healthy choice that will give me peak performance health wise. Also, I don’t trust the food industry anymore. It’s all about money, not good health.
—RodneyBaker

Vegan makes me feel better

Since I have taken all meat away from my diet I feel great. Less pain in my stomach. Less doctor appointments….
—Guest Michele

Meet your Meat

I saw Meet Your Meat on YouTube and it was personally traumatizing. I also heard that vegetarians tend to have less stress.
—Guest Mishi

Wanted a change

I decided to go vegetarian because I wanted healthier looking skin and I wanted to physically feel better (not that i didn’t exercise)!! I never enjoyed eating beef, thus i ate alot of turkey and chicken which I slowly stopped eating anyway!! So I thought why not just go veggie??
—Guest becka

Beacuse I choose to be!

When I was 8 I became a vegetarian but it only lasted for a month cause my family stopped me and now I am 13 and I am a vegetarian cause I choose to be one.
—Guest unknown

WHY?

I was inspired by my fav singer, Christofer Drew Ingle. Then I watched several videos of PETA. I also want a nicer skin and healthier lifestyle. It’s quite hard because I have to give up on my fav food, kebab and burger. But after that it’s okay and I’m used to it. People laugh when I said I’m a Vegan. My family either, but they support me by buying me Veggie foods. I don’t care, I’m holding to my will. People should think wiser about eating flesh. I’m also an animal lover and I wanna be a VET so I don’t eat my patients. I am 14 and I hope I’ll stick to Vegan FOREVER!
—Guest Fidzah

Illness

I was always ill until I discovered my culprit… eating meat beside that I gained so much weight I found it hard to sleep at night.
—Guest Lilly

Horrible :(

I googled Slaughterhouse Photos, and was… horrified. I mean, I can NEVER eat a burger again. we’re talking a pig chained to the wall as a man scoops it’s guts out. it was nasty horrible and everything. i HELD a baby pig once and i thought it was adorable. how can we innocently EAT the chopped up bodies of animals as smart as horses or dogs? i mean chickens are kind of stupid to start with, but cows goats sheep pigs and horses, do NOT deserve to die.
—Guest ‘Silver Ember’

A peaceful rebellion

I’ve recently realized that I have never enjoyed eating meat. Sure, maybe I liked a burger here and there but it was nothing that couldn’t be replaced with a veggie burger. I’m all about peace and love. This world is so full of evil and I like to do all I can to reduce that evil. So for me, becoming a vegetarian was a sort of “peaceful rebellion” against all the hate and pain in the world. If we can’t love animals and spare them pain, then who’s to say we can love humans?
—Guest tara

Go vegetarian

I have digestive problems. If I have some meat, or greasy oily food, I have diarrhea right away.
—Guest juseooh

Why I am Vegetarian

I think that anyone who likes animals should go a tleast vegetairan. I am going Vegan today and am very excited!
—Guest Vashon

Not a full vegetarian

I thinks that raising and killing animals in horrible conditions, and transform it into bad quality food, is disgusting, and so disrespectful… All that energy, all those efforts to stay alive, for the sake of making gruesome, tasteless ans shapeless chicken nuggets???
—Guest Zowe

Why meat when there are other options?

I loved meat before I became vegetarian even though I liked animals. I started this diet because there was good environment to start with and also I did not see the meanings of animal abusing. Since I moved to NZ, I’ve found many vegetarian choices at restaurants, & many of those dishes looked good. Why would you choose some dishes over the others only because they contain meats? I like eating what I believe it would taste good. Also, I saw a TV show called ‘Kill it, Cook it, Eat it.’ I learned how humans grow them is horrible. I remembered that my farmer friends feed cows to make them fat. If they have a sick cow, they just let it starve and die. No animals should be treated like that. If I stop eating meat for one week, maybe I can save one chicken’s life. If I stop eating meat for 10 years, maybe I can save 100 chickens, 1 cow, and 3 pigs. If 100 people stop eating meat for 10 years, thousands of chickens, 100 cows, & 300pigs will be saved. I will be happy to be one of the 100.
—Guest Kiki

Why vegetarian?

Because animals are my friends, and I don’t eat my friends.
—Guest Robinson

Why am I a vegetarian?

I just love animals! Flesh is for zombies, not us!
—Guest Ali

Why, why not?

No one should die to be on my plate, no one should endure such cruelty, no one should feel the pain the animals feel. Does there need to be any other reason?

I got tired

I decided to become a vegetarian because I got tired of eating meat. I never was a big fan of pork or red meat so it was easy to cut that out my diet. I love eating turkey burgers and fish, but recently I saw my mother cleaning chicken and I got grossed out. I know its going to take time for me to completely give up fish such as salmon, shrimp, and catfish, but i figure in due time I will. I know I must learn more about this lifestyle in ordered to succeed, but I just want to be healthy. I am 25 and I feel that this is a great choice, will see if I can make it through the holidays. :) I normally just eat sides anyway
